College Advising
Below are steps your scholar should be taking during their high school years to prepare for applying to colleges & universities! These steps are important even if your scholar ends up heading into a technical program or career. Plans may change right before or after graduation, or even later in life!
Ninth Grade
- Be familiar with the graduation requirements
- Focus on success in courses
- PSAT & CLT 10 prep
- Identifying passions and interests/career exploration (Xello & other research)
- Volunteering, particularly in an area of interest for career
- Explore possible college/university programs & begin list of 50 possible schools
- Meet with Mrs. Ellis to answer any questions that may arise
Tenth Grade
- Be familiar with the graduation requirements
- Focus on success in courses
- PSAT & CLT 10 prep
- Identifying passions and interests/career exploration (Xello & other research)
- Volunteering, particularly in an area of interest for career
- Narrow in focus of possible college/university programs to 30 schools
- Meet with Mrs. Ellis to answer any questions that may arise
Eleventh Grade
- Be familiar with the graduation requirements
- Focus on success in courses
- Take most rigorous courses available
- PSAT prep
- Exam is administered in October in school. Prepare to potentially each National Merit Scholarship!
- CLT, SAT, and ACT prep
- Each will be offered in school 1 time, plan to take again at the very end of the school year on your own
- Identifying passions and interests/career exploration (Xello & other research)
- Volunteering, particularly in an area of interest for career
- Narrow in focus of possible college/university programs to 15-20 schools
- Meet with Mrs. Ellis regularly to answer any questions
Twelfth Grade
- Be familiar with the graduation requirements
- Focus on success in courses
- Take most rigorous courses available
- PSAT prep
- Exam is administered in October in school. Prepare to potentially each National Merit Scholarship!
- CLT, SAT, and ACT prep
- Each will be offered in school 1 time, plan to take again at the very end of the school year on your own
- Identifying passions and interests/career exploration (Xello & other research)
- Volunteering, particularly in an area of interest for career
- Narrow in focus of possible college/university programs to 10-15 schools by start of school and work on determining application deadlines
- Scholarship search and determine deadlines
- Identify & ask various teachers, coaches, supervisors, and other mentors who can write letters of recommendation
- Meet with Mrs. Ellis regularly to answer any questions
